  1. I haven’t yet addressed the reboot idea on The Review is Out There yet, so here, in a very large nutshell, is what I think:

If this were a perfect world for X-Philes, it would be a great idea. But there’s so much that just wouldn’t happen, not the least of which is that Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny probably wouldn’t go back. David left before the show even ended, and Gillian has mentioned in interviews that she probably wouldn’t do a whole show again. Why is this a problem?

    1. Replacing the two leads wouldn’t attract an audience. X-Philes everywhere would scream in outrage, and the whole thing would whimper and die before it even got started.

    2. Putting in a new cast might work better, but not much. This isn’t Star Trek and I don’t think X-Files: The Next Generation has as much appeal. Besides, they pretty much tried to do that with John Doggett and Monica Reyes and look what happened – the ratings basically plummeted.

    3. The entire premise of The X-Files is not alien invasions or paranormal creatures or government conspiracies, but the relationship between two characters. That’s what drives the show forward, that’s what appeals to so many people, that’s why the show has so many dedicated and devoted long-time fans and dedicated and devoted new ones. In the TV world today, we have plenty of crime dramas and creepy monsters, but we don’t have Mulder and Scully and that is what sets The X-Files apart from other shows. Take that away and you’ve basically got Season 9 – nothing terrible, but definitely nothing special either.

Chris Carter has said on multiple occasions that he shares that view, that the show is about Mulder and Scully – when asked about Doggett and Reyes at the 20th anniversary panel he kind of shrugged off the question, like he wanted to forget about those characters. It seems strange to me that he would even want to do a reboot that didn’t feature Mulder and Scully – those are his characters and he’s obviously very proud of them, as he should be.

I also can’t imagine David or Gillian being jazzed about letting other people play Mulder and Scully, as they are the roles that basically made their careers.

Now, a miniseries would be awesome and I would be interested to see how The X-Files handles that particular format, as it would be ideal if Chris Carter wanted to really stretch out the alien invasion storyline and wrap things up more smoothly. Of course, a third movie would be awesome as well. But depending on how much they want to put into the ending, I think a miniseries might be the better way to go. But yeah, it absolutely must have the two original leads in their original characters.

Those are my thoughts. 🙂 Thanks again for fueling the enthusiasm of X-Philes everywhere.
